Held Equine Environmental & Liability Awareness Program - January 12, 2008

The Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District, the Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District along with the Natural Resource Conservation Service, the Columbiana County Farm Bureau, and the Ohio State Extension-Mahoning County hosted an Equine Environmental and Liability Awareness Program on Saturday, January 12, 2008.  The program was held at the St. George Knights of Columbus Hall, 271 W. Chestnut Street, Lisbon, Ohio from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Under Ohio law horses, ponies, llamas, and alpacas are defined as livestock.  Like any other livestock owners, owners of these animals need to begin making environmental, conservation, and natural resource issues a priority.  On average, one horse generates 8 tons of manure per year.

Managers, operators, or horse owners of even one horse interested in developing and implementing practices that are economically viable, environmentally friendly, and socially acceptable, should contact the Columbiana SWCD at 330-332-8732 or toll free 1-877-345-1198.  The registration fee for the program was $5.00 which included lunch, refreshments, and program materials.  Registration must be received by January 4, 2008.

Held June 25, 2007 - LIVESTOCK MORTALITY COMPOSTING TRAINING & CERTIFICATION

A livestock mortality composting training and certification session was held June 25, 2007 from 6:00-8:30pm in McMahon Hall at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, Canfield, Ohio.  omposting of dead stock is an economic alternative for disposing of dead livestock. And composting, a natural process in which the carcass is decomposed by bacteria, is an environmentally friendly way to recycle the nutrients contained in an animal carcass.  When done properly, composting destroys disease causing bacteria and viruses.  Problems associated with flies, vermin and scavengers at the composting site are also eliminated.  To legally compost livestock mortality in Ohio, a livestock producer must be ‘certified’.
